This Is Fall: Good Things From Across The Pond

Some of my favorite Fall items happen to be English-made:

A note about the Bosmere wax jacket above: Pictured is my wife's jacket but after seeing her use it for the last few years I've decided to order one for myself. I keep seeing "wax jacket roundups" (most recently over at A Trip Down South) but I have yet to see anyone mention these. Made with gardeners and equestrians in mind these jackets are really inexpensive (you won't believe it), warm, and great-looking. The "poor man's Barbour?" Perhaps, but at the price I just paid it's a no-brainer. If you are interested in these, leave a comment and I'll email you with details.

  1. I've wanted a Barbour or Filson for some time but the cost and recent popularity has kept one out of reach (I had a traditional Bean field jacket I wore for years and years until my wife made me ditch it - I'd like more water repellancy in the next one). I just picked up a Woolrich waxed cotton jacket and am awaiting its arrival, but this looks extremely promising as a fine alternative... and imported right here in the Charlotte metro area!

  3. Thanks for the shoutout. I did a little bit of Googling and think that I found the link that you're talking about regarding the Bosmere jackets. If it is the one you're referring to, that price is pretty astounding. Would you drop me an email about it?

  4. What's the sizing like on the Bosmere jackets? One company's 40 isn't another's you know. Great blog by the way. Came by way of William Brown.

  5. Anon- Thanks. Sizing is pretty generous. I'm a 42 normally and the Medium is roomy with decent arm length.

  6. What's your sleeve length?
I'm ~ a 40 chest but 36 sleeve, worried the medium will be a bit short in the arms.

Thanks for any help. Glad I found your blog!

I wear a 34 sleeve length in shirts and the outer cuffs on this jacket come past my wrists but there is an inner cuff that could give you problems with arms that length. It's worth a try. I've had to exchange a jacket with them before and it wasn't too much hassle. Good luck!

  10. I see on their website that a Medium is a 36" chest - is this what you ordered given your typical size 42? Thanks for the post...

  11. Mac-

Sizing on the website is wrong. The Medium is 24" across the front from armpit to armpit with sleeves at 30.75" from the collar to the cuff. The Small is 2" less in chest and arm length. Trim guys with long arms are not going to enjoy the fit on this one.

  12. I'm guessing that makes the medium a 48". Would the Small be 2 inches off of the total or armpit to armpit length? I'd love to grab one of these but being a 40" chest I'm worried it won't fit well.

  13. Small is 22" across the front, armpit to armpit. Arm length would be my only concern for you on the Small. 28 3/4" from collar to cuff, measured down the shoulder.

  14. Thanks, I think I'll grab the small and if it doesn't fit swap it for a medium and just have it altered. At this price, even with alterations, it's a amazing deal.

  15. A bit late to the discussion but I had a question about the jacket's lining. I noticed it's quilted. Is it bulky or thick? I'm looking for a spring coat and not necessarily something terribly warm. Thanks.

Definitely not a Spring coat. The lining is quilted and more suitable for colder temps.

  17. great looking jacket. i tried buying a similar one from Outback Trading Co. called Oxford. However, the size was wrong, and the fit was off. shipping costs down the drain!
    how's the sizing on this?
i'm an athletic build (lean) typically a 38R suit size, 31in waist...normal length arms, broad shoulders.
what size do you suggest i get...i was thinking smal?

  18. Just an update. I ordered my Bosmere in Small and it fit perfectly in the chest in length but had terribly short sleeves. They managed to find a hood to go with jacket and i had 1 1/2 inch cuffs added to it. Now it's perfect.

Thanks for all of your help.

  19. Rick:
Did the company find the hood for you? Did the company also lengthen the jacket sleeves for you, or your own tailor?

    thanks!
